| | A group of Tri-Valley ROP DHS students were among 10 finalist groups in a “got milk?” video-making contest that could win $20,000 for their school’s art program.
Online voting, which started Monday and ran through Jan. 24, determined the winner. The winner was announced Jan. 25. Congratulations to TVROP Viscom class for taking 5th place in the contest. A check for $2,500 was presented to the class on Jan. 26th.
The contest was sponsored by the California Milk Processor Board. The second-place school won $10,000 and the eight runners-up received $2,500 in funding.
Tri-Valley ROP teacher, Brett Shapiro, said he found out about the contest from a TV commercial shortly before the deadline. Brett said four of his students did the majority of the work, including one who spent is 18th birthday on the project.
The students are seniors James Genzale, Matt Pecota and Drake Schullerts, and junior Angela Tran. Brett said that the same team has gained recognition before, winning an award at the California Independent Film Festival.
Students age 14 to 18 who attend California public high schools were eligible to enter the contest from Oct. 5 to Dec. 20. They were asked to recreate one of the scenes from “White Gold’s Battle for Milkquarious,” a 20 minute “rock opera” video, and submit their entries online. The video is about main character White Gold’s quest to save his hometown of Milkquarious from a potentially deadly milk shortage. Judges picked the nine finalists, with the 10th decided by “people’s choice” through a popular vote online. About 100 groups entered.
“My students really did it on their own,” Brett said. | |
